Swine Flu

SWINE FLU - How worried should we be as frontline caregivers in the emergency rooms of our Nation?

Headlines today read - “UN seeks 1.5 billion for swine flu” and the ongoing debate among the medical profession worldwide is whether this virus is going to be a global catastrophe? There are mixed reports coming from around the globe since the majority of persons infected with the H1N1 Swine flu virus recover without treatment. So why panic? Influenza viruses like swine flu are unpredictable and can mutate into more lethal virus strains.

Countries will vaccinate their citizens against two flu strains this season and most areas will not receive the Swine flu vaccine until late December. Many cases of flu will flood the emergency rooms around the world. Exposure to the virus if symptoms occur will force the caregiver into prophylactic treatment with Tamiflu and a 10 day isolation period. It is imperative all frontline caregivers receive the vaccine as soon as possible. It is a great concern if pandemic proportions occur - who will provide the care for the influx of flu sufferers if each Nation’s frontline caregivers are not on duty because of exposure to the virus itself.
